January 29 week at a peek

Dear students and families,

I hope everyone had an opportunity to enjoy our beautiful winter snow!

Last week’s highlights include “Flashback Friday spirit day,” live student blogs and the yellow squad demonstrating the “catch and clap” drama game (see video below).

Student Blogs Live!

Happily, student blogs went live Friday afternoon.  As you can see, students have been busy!

Students were asked to:

  • personalize/decorate blogs with theme and colour changes; add widgets like the ones on my blog; create a personal avatar (see learning links pages).
  • write a post called “What I’m Looking Forward to in Blogging” and submit it.
  • start an idea notebook (pink), make jot notes about “The ABC’s of Me.”  Take those ideas and turn them into an “About Me” page (We will continue with this work this week in class.).
  • Feel free to work on more posts than I have assigned or tweak your blog at home with parent permission and supervision.   🙂

Students were asked to follow these guidelines discussed in class:

  • Don’t be YAPPY.
  • Do not add pictures (from the internet or those taken personally) until we have a copyright lesson.  Photos may be used from Compfight only until we have a copyright lesson.
  • Do not add videos at this time.
  • Be cautious with humour – what is funny in person does not always translate to funny online.
  • No student comments until we have a commenting lesson.
  • Be kind in all you do as you develop a positive digital footprint.  🙂

Students have been very conscientious online.  Keep up the good work and positive attitudes!

V.I.P. of the Week

We look forward to Avery taking the V.I.P. spot this week.  Here is the up-to-date revised schedule.

Grade 5 and 6 math quizzes

Thank you to the 2 grade 5 students who returned addition/subtraction of decimal math quizzes with parent signatures.  I hope to see the rest return so I can send them home for keeps!

I hope to send the grade 6 factor, prime and composite quizzes home on Monday for parent signature.

  • Remember, we are midway through this unit.  B (beginning to meet expectations) or N (not yet meeting expectations) is a sign that more work and review needs to be done on a certain outcome.  B and N are opportunities to revisit the topic and grow your brain.
  • These concepts will return again on the end of unit quiz.

Spelling

  • We work on our thirteenth spelling lesson on Tuesday and Wednesday with the spelling tests and assignments due on Thursday.  Students will get new spelling booklets on Tuesday.
  • Students are asked to complete all corrections from the old booklets this week.

Here are this week’s spelling lists:

Here’s a look at week 20 . . .

You have done a terrific job with your first comment – letter format, comment guidelines, punctuation and capitalization. I’m glad you are finding it easy and fun and that you are enjoying the widgets.

I’m not sure how I discovered blogging, but I do know why I did it. If you look below at my reply to Camden’s comment, I spent the summer of 2011 learning to blog in preparation of using the blog with my grade 6/7 class at the time. I was interested in giving my students the opportunity to have an authentic and relevant audience for their writing. When students hand in written work to their teachers, it is often “good enough.” You have an audience of one – me. However, when students realize that the audience is much larger – “good enough” can become “good” or even “great.” I wanted to give my students the opportunity to develop a positive digital footprint and the opportunity for their families and other staff members to follow along our learning journey – one post at a time. There is no better way to use your power than with your words. It is an opportunity to choose wisely. Blogging can inspire us to do better and reach farther – to make our world a better place. There are so many reasons to blog and learn together. That is all for now – because, I fear, I talk too much . . .

      Keep having fun!

I was surprised of being a blogger because of how fun it turned out to be. I surprised that you could put a virtual pet and a calendar to your blog. I was also surprised on how less complicated it is, at first I thought it would be hard but when you get the hang of it it’s really not that hard!

Thanks for teaching me how to blog! I loved that you put up what is upcoming, like math, spelling, V.I.P. and more. I also liked how you put up the video on the catch and clap game. How do you make videos on your blog?

      Dear Ethan,

Congratulations on your first comment. You can be proud of how well you follow the commenting guidelines, capitalization and punctuation. Thank you for all the compliments. I am glad you are enjoying blogging!

Videos take up much space so most videos are too large to upload onto a blog. However, if they exist on a platform like Youtube or Vimeo, the HTML code can be easily copied and pasted into the text (HTML) post editor in your dashboard. The videos/slideshows I make for class, end up on iMovie on my computer at home and then I upload them to my Vimeo account. I then, go to “share” on the Vimeo video, set my criteria for display/replay and copy the HTML code and paste it into the text (HTML) editor of the post I want to insert the video into. This procedure can be followed to insert video widgets into the sidebars of your blog. We will explore the “how to’s” of video a little more in the near future. Thanks for waiting to post videos until we go over a few more things in class.

      Keep up the good work!

Congratulations on your first comment and I am glad you enjoy my blog.

Do be sure you get help from a classroom “expert” or myself if you are stuck on blogging. I’m glad you asked about a tip page. I actually have quite a few. If you scroll to the top of this page to the navigation menu, you will see a tab that says “About our Blog.” Nestled underneath that tab are 3 related pages: “What is a Blog?” “How to Comment,” and “Quality Posts.” The last 2, in particular, are extremely helpful tip pages. Be sure to refer to them and ask questions in class.

      Never give up!

      Dear Camden,

What a terrific job you have done with your first comment – excellent letter form, following of guidelines and capitalization/punctuation. I’m glad you like my blog.

“How did I feel when I started blogging?” Well, I remember back in June of 2011, I decided that I wanted to start a class blog in September. I remember making 3 Blogger blogs to test it out – one about airplanes, one about cooking and another about general thoughts. I also learned how to use Twitter at the same time. Next, I began working on my class blog – they very one that we use today. However, it has had a few makeovers over the last 7 years.

I remember feeling motivated, interested, focused and driven to my goal. Sometimes, I perhaps even felt a little frustrated when something was not going as I had hoped. However, I had a goal in sight and worked at it like it was my job – every day and night during the month of July so I would be ready to go with my class in September.

All the best with your blogging journey,
      Ms B.
