Dear students and families,

The slide show above shows photos of students finishing Leprechaun puppets on Monday, March 16.  That was the last time that most of the class were together in person in a large group.

I hope this post finds you and your family doing well.  I sure miss seeing everyone in class every day 😥   However, I am looking forward to sharing this unique social distance style of continuous education with you!

I expect this first continuous education social distance style post will be a little longer than most.  For those of you ready to jump into school with your teacher again, the weekly blog post will be your guide.  Our weekly plan recommends 15-20 minutes each of:

  1. health (personal organization, video conference etiquette)
  2. math (multiplication review and multiplication problem solving on “Math Tac Toe” choice board)
  3. reading (this blog post and your own choice)
  4. writing (“Think Tac Toe” choice board to use with your spelling list)

Here is a map of this week’s learning plan:

My goal is to have a virtual meeting with each student and a parent on Zoom or phone this week.

One-on-one time with the teacher may be time for students to:

    • get teacher’s help with work – students, please write questions down as they come up during the week.
    • share information about learning supplies and technologies available at home.
    • show the teacher work, conference and celebrate it!
    • do a learning activity together with the teacher.
    • let the teacher know how things are going.
    • have a nice talk with the teacher.

Health (15-20 minutes per day)

Let’s talk about organization…

Start each day by copying this down on a new notebook page. Start your work for the day on the next page. After Monday, remember to write the correct day and date.
  • Do you have a place to work?  It is easier if you create a headquarters that you go to everyday to start and finish your work.
  • Do you have a notebook, pencil and eraser?  Everyone’s yellow planner notebook went home.  A single notebook would be great to do all your work in.  If you don’t have a notebook, you will have to get creative.  Do you have some one-side good or other paper that you can use at home?
  • Do you have a watch? a timer? a clock?  One of these will be needed to keep track of time.  I’m so glad you all learned to tell time so well this year!
  • Start your work day by starting a new page in your notebook and copying the plan.  Optional:  Your parents might like to print this weekly planner instead and have you fill it out everyday.  Click to view and print the Weekly Student Planner Apr 6-9
  • Your planner notebook and your weekly student planner sheets will help you keep track of your plans, learning, work and questions.  They are important to keep so you know where to start working the next day and so you know what to say when you share your learning with Ms B.

 💡 Tip:  How to Plan Your Day

It can be hard to know what order to do things in.  Here’s an idea that might help.

  • Find some one-side good paper and cut it into cards.
  • Write the names of the subjects you need to do and some of the things you’d like to do on each card.  Examples:  Math, Reading, Writing, Health, Snack, Dance Break, Lunch, Play with the Puppy, Nature Walk, Clean Up
  • Find a container to keep the cards in (In my example, I found an empty dryer sheet box.  You might use or make an envelope.)
  • Take the cards out each work day morning and put them in the order you want to do things on that day.
  • As you do each activity, put the cards in the job box or envelope so they are ready for the next day.
  • Challenge:  decorate your cards and your container.  Only if your parents have time, ask them to email pictures to Ms B. to include in next week’s post.
  • When all the cards are in the box, you are done your school day! 😀

Videoconferencing Etiquette and Safety

I hope that we will be able to videoconference online one-on-one, in small groups and as a whole class with technology called Zoom.   I expect we will have a few challenges like the animals in the video above had.  Before we Zoom conference, I need to find out your parents’ wishes and we need to learn some safety guidelines and video conferencing manners or etiquette.

  • Please read the “virtual learning guideline” below about video conference etiquette (manners).
  • Create your own poster about virtual learning etiquette – this is your health poster assignment this week.  Ask your parents to take a photo of your poster(s), if they have time, and email it/them to Ms B. to share in next week’s post.
  • If you need more to do – take the ChallengeWhat is the difference and what is the same about video conference safety and regular cyber safety?  Compare videoconference safety to cyber safety.  Create a poster that compares video conference safety with cyber safety.  We will work more on videoconference safety after the spring break.
  • This is a BIG challenge – good luck!


Math (15 – 20 minutes per day)

  • Spend 15-20 minutes per day on your favourite activities from this math choice board.
  • If you don’t finish your activity in one day, come back to it the next day.
  • Write your work in your notebook.


Read (15-20 minutes per day)

  1. Read this blog post – Ms B. suggests you read it every day!
  2. Choose your own reading material (books, magazines, instruction manuals, recipes, online material with parent permission).
  3. Mix up your reading style:  in your head, read aloud, read to someone else
  4.  Be ready to show me/tell me about your reading this week.

Writing (15-20 minutes per day)

  • Spend 15-20 minutes per day on your favourite activities from this writing choice board.
  • If you don’t finish your activity in one day, come back to it the next day.
  • Write your work in your notebook.

Getting Help from Ms B. this Week

  • For this week, write down your questions and ask your parents to contact Ms B., when they have time.
  • Parents, please email me with your contact information:  1.  email (Zoom teleconference), 2.  phone number.
  • If you want to try a Zoom conference first, we will do our best.  If it fails, it is helpful for me to have your phone number so I know exactly what number to call.
  • I started learning how to use Zoom last week!  I look forward to learning together! 🙂

    Dear class,

    I thought I would start the comments with my own. You will notice I am using letter form with a greeting followed by a comma. After the comma, I press “enter.” When typing, only press enter when you want to start a new section. Otherwise, the computer will move to the next line for you. I will press “enter” again after this sentence so a new paragraph will start.

    I would like to share the story of my work at home headquarters with you. I’m very lucky that I had a spare bedroom in my house that is still waiting for me to paint. It was pretty much empty except for a little junk. It was the place for things that didn’t have a place room. I decided that doing teacher work on the couch or at the kitchen table would probably turn into an ugly mess and be very distracting for me. So, I put my thinking cap on, went out to the garage to see what I could find. It didn’t take long before I found a couple of saw horses and an old door that was no longer being used as a door. I brought them into the house and created a very delightful table. I put a stepladder in the corner of the room to hold my hot chocolate mug and other important teacher stuff. The “junk” from the room is under the “table.” I’m really lucky to have this nice space to work in. I hope you have as good luck as I did in creating your work at home headquarters.
